How to choose a sauna

When choosing a sauna, three things matter most: what kind of heat you prefer, how many people will use it and what electrical connection you can provide. The rest comes down to equipment and budget.

Finnish, infrared or combination?

Type	Temperature	People	Price
Infrared	up to 65 °C	1–4	€1,005 to €2,999
Finnish	up to 90 °C	2–6	€1,499 to €3,899
Combination	Finnish up to 90 °C, infrared up to 65 °C	2–6	€3,568 to €9,999
Bio herbal salt	up to 90 °C	5–9	€4,500 to €7,299

An infrared sauna uses infrared light to warm the body directly, not the air, so it works at a lower temperature and does not need to be preheated. A Finnish sauna, with hot stones and water poured over them, gives the classic sauna experience. A combination sauna offers both. The differences are explained in the article Infrared or Finnish sauna?

Size and space

The smallest one-person saunas measure 90 × 90 cm and are about 1.9 m high, so they also fit in a bathroom or bedroom. For a family, saunas for 4 to 6 people are a better choice. Before buying, also measure the route to the installation site: doors, stairs and corners. More in the article Bathroom sauna.

Electrical connection

Infrared saunas and smaller Finnish saunas with a 3 kW heater run on single-phase 230 V. Larger Finnish, combination and outdoor saunas with a heater of 4.5 kW or more usually need a three-phase 400 V connection. The exact requirements are listed for each product, and the preparation is described in the article Home sauna installation.

How much does a sauna cost?

Prices start at €1,005 for the JIO90 infrared sauna for one person. The most expensive model is the JZC210 outdoor combination sauna for 6 people, priced at €9,999.

Can I put a sauna in the garden?

Yes. Choose an outdoor sauna, which is built for installation outdoors. Prices start at €3,676. What you need for the installation is explained in the article What is an outdoor sauna?
